A New Chapter on Old Ground: Adelaide University Athletics Club

Founded in 1906, the Adelaide University Athletics Club is one of South Australia’s oldest running institutions. Over more than a century, the club has seen countless athletes come and go, including its most notable alumnus, Olympian and middle distance great David “Fitzy” Fitzsimons - a reminder of the depth of history that still underpins the club today.

Like many long-standing clubs, AUAC has experienced quieter periods. After a few down years, 2022 marked a turning point, when the club re-affiliated with Athletics SA and began rebuilding with a renewed sense of purpose. Under the guidance of coach Michael Nitschke, the focus shifted toward a predominantly distance-based group - one built on consistency, structure, and inclusivity rather than numbers alone.

That approach has paid off. The club has grown to over 40 members, now comprising sprinters, throwers, jumpers, runners, and walkers, with athletes ranging from juniors through to masters. Training nights reflect that diversity - different disciplines sharing the same space, pushing each other on, and contributing to a welcoming, energetic atmosphere.

For the distance group, the heart of the club is the Graduates Clubhouse at the Uni Loop. Twice a week at 5:30pm, runners gather for structured sessions around Adelaide’s most recognisable circuit. Sundays tell a different story, with long runs that explore the city and surroundings - from Belair National Park to Kuitpo and the hilly Mawson Road.

Each January, that same loop becomes the stage for Run the Loop, AUAC’s signature event. Simple in concept and fiercely competitive, it’s a chance to see who’s fastest around the circuit and to kick off the year with a clear marker of fitness and intent.

Beyond training and racing, AUAC remains deeply connected to the wider athletics community. Members regularly volunteer at Athletics SA club competitions and major events like the City to Bay, continuing a long tradition of giving back to the sport that sustains the club.

Ask anyone what truly defines AUAC, though, and they’ll likely mention the Queen’s Jubilee Hill Effort in Belair National Park - 4 kilometres at a steady 4% gradient. It’s a session that strips things back to effort and honesty, offering a clear snapshot of 5km fitness and a shared challenge that bonds the group through discomfort.

More than 100 years on, Adelaide University Athletics Club continues to evolve, grounded in history, strengthened by community, and quietly building its next chapter, one lap at a time.
